“Bienvenue á Year 2!”
This term's topic is Water World!
Children are learning that water is important to all living livings and without water there would be no life on Earth. We use water every day. We depend on water to stay clean and healthy, just like the many plants and animals we share our world with.
We began our topic going to an aquarium (our immersive space) and working in groups to guess water sounds and show what we already knew about water and animals that live in it.
We have been enhancing our map skills, using world maps to identify where water is and distinguishing between fresh and salt water. We then linked our topic work with English, to research and create our own information texts about salt water sea creatures!
We have looked at places on land where there is and isn’t a lot of water and how certain animals have adapted to such environments. We researched and made quadramas about these animals! Have a look below at some great examples.
Did you know that a Thorny Devil has a 'false head', which it uses to make it look bigger and therefore harder for a predator to swallow?
Reading Race – On your marks, get ready and read!
The race is on! This term we have introduced our class Reading Race! The challenge for children is to read as many books as they can within the half term (this could include library, school and home books). Please encourage any reading and write in their guided reading records that they have completed and understood the texts. I wonder who will be the race winners at the end!
Ways to help your child at home
• Read as much as you can with your child – every day if possible!
• Practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. 'Hit the Button' is a useful online game that we have been playing. Here’s the link:
• Play games to practise the Year 1 and Year 2 tricky word spellings.
• If you can, please discuss with your child the work they have done as the term progresses and let them teach you!
General class information
Blue home/school book
We send homework every week for you and your child to complete together. Books are sent home on a Friday and should be completed and returned every Wednesday. Children are responsible for ensuring that they take and hand in homework on time.
Year 1/Year 2 key words
In the homework pack, you will find a list of key words that children need to learn by the end of year 2, so any practice at home will help!
PE days: Tuesday and Thursday
Please can your child leave their PE kit in school for the whole week. They can take their PE kit home on Friday, but please ensure your child brings their kit into school on the following Monday.
Healthy Snacks - Fruit
Please don't send any snacks into school as the school will provide each child with a piece of fruit.
Each day at school the children will meet together for an assembly. On Friday afternoons we have a Celebration Assembly when we share the children’s celebrations or special work. Parents are invited to this assembly at 2.45pm. Two children are chosen each week to receive a certificate. If your child is one of these then we will notify you on the Thursday in case you are able to attend.
